How Houston Native Michael Cokins Built a Successful Insurance Career After New Orleans Disaster

HOUSTON - Oct. 22, 2024 - PRLog -- Michael Cokins, a seasoned insurance professional with a diverse career, continues to make waves in the industry through his dedication to service, leadership, and mentorship.

Michael Cokins graduated from Lamar High School, where he stood out in both academics and sports, earning varsity letters in baseball and basketball. In 1999, he started studying at the University of Houston and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Business Administration. During college, he developed leadership skills through programs like LeadUH and Ignite Leadership. He also enjoyed golf as a member of the Golf Club of Houston.

After graduation, Cokins became General Manager at Golden Corral in New Orleans, leading a team of 70 employees and supporting local marketing. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit, and after evacuating to Houston, Cokins returned to New Orleans to volunteer for nine months, helping with recovery efforts. This experience sparked his interest in the insurance industry.

In 2007, Cokins joined State Farm as a claims adjuster and quickly advanced. By 2015, he was part of Houston's Corporate & Business Development team. He credits his success to having a mentor and encourages others entering the industry to do the same.

In 2021, Cokins began working in Claims and Investigations, helping people and businesses recover from disasters. His job involves a lot of travel, giving him the chance to explore new places and play golf on top courses around the country.

Looking ahead, Cokins plans to launch a podcast and write a book to share practical advice and mentorship for future insurance leaders. "Mentorship has been key to my success, and I want to pass that on," he says.
