The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art Presents: The Voices of Diaspora Program

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Oct. 29, 2024 - PRLog -- The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art proudly announces the launch of The Voices of Diaspora Program, a yearlong initiative running from November 2024 to May 2025. This program explores the rich histories of five communities that have experienced diaspora, celebrating their contributions to global culture.

The program opens with A Day of Wisdom and Transformation on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Highlights include The Seven Offerings for the Prosperity of the Land Ceremony and the traditional hanging of prayer flags, believed to bring peace and purification. Additionally, Alice Kandell and Tashi Chodron will share insights on the 1990s Tibetan Resettlement Project, which helped 1,000 Tibetans relocate to the U.S. from India and Nepal.

Upcoming program events include:
  • Saturday, November 9th, 2024 | Shirley Chisholm's Legacy: Reimagining Democracy in the U.S. and Diaspora with Dr. Zinga Fraser at Christ Church Parish Hall.
  • Friday, November 15th, 2024 | An Evening of Live Jazz featuring local musicians at Christ Church Parish Hall. Tickets are $20, available for purchase online.
  • Sunday, November 24th, 2024 | Unsilenced Histories: The Untold Stories of Staten Island's African American Community, exploring the hidden history of African American contributions dating back to the 17th century.

The Voices of Diaspora program is supported by the New York City Council Cultural Immigrant Initiative Discretionary Grants from City Council Members Joseph Borelli and David Carr.
