Follow on Google News | Hawai'i State Library Hosts "Hawai'i's Free Spirit" ExhibitionHonoring Aviation Pioneer Sen-Yet Young, for his collaboration between America and China
By: America-China Bridge Sen-Yet Young, born in Honolulu in 1891, was inspired by Sun Yat-sen, the first President of modern China, to join the Chinese revolutionary movement and strengthen the connections between Hawaii and China. Young is celebrated for his role in organizing the first Chinese Air Force and is often referred to as "The Father of China's Air Force." The exhibition was researched, assembled, designed, and produced by the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Museum in Zhongshan, China, with the assistance of Leigh-Wai Doo. It features documents and photographs that chronicle Young's remarkable journey. The exhibit were shipped to Honolulu for this special occasion. "Sen-Yet Young represents the enduring, peaceful relations between the people of China and America," said Leigh-Wai Doo, a Honolulu attorney and former city council member. "This exhibit tells the story of his life and achievements -- a legacy that continues to inspire emulation today." Young was a key figure in aviation history. He studied at 'Iolani School and the College of Hawaii and later pursued aviation studies in California and the Curtis Aviation School in New York. Heeding Sun Yat-sen's call to "save China through aviation," Young founded an aircraft manufacturing company and organized China's first air force. Tragically, Young was killed in battle in 1923, but his legacy lives on. Join us to celebrate the legacy of Sen-Yet Young and explore his contributions to aviation and international relations.
