Event Raises $63,000 for the HBA DOC Foundation's Workforce Development Programs

DURHAM, N.C. - Dec. 16, 2024 - PRLog -- The Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties (HBA DOC) is proud to announce that its recent annual Casino Night and Auction raised a record-breaking $63,000 for the HBA DOC Foundation's Workforce Development Programs. Held at the PNC Triangle Club at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the event was a fun-filled night of games, prizes and more. The HBA DOC Foundation's Workforce Development Programs include annual scholarships for area high school students pursuing a secondary education in the trades and the Building Our Future Summer Careers Academy, an 8 week, registered, pre-apprenticeship on-the-job training program in Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Masonry, and Carpentry.

Sponsors included 84 Lumber, Mebane and Wendell Building Supply, Talbert Building Supply, and Truist. In addition to the sponsors, the HBA DOC is indebted to the dedicated members of the Foundation Board, consisting of Chair Mitch Barron/DRB Homes, Randy Lanou/BuildSense, Nicole Morrison/Red Ladder Residential, Pete Thorn/Peter Thorn Builders, Lee Bowman/Legion Land & Development, and Ken Combs/CQC Home.

The HBA DOC Foundation has awarded over $360,000 to area students pursuing a career in the trades since the Foundation was established in 1997. The HBA Foundation Board of Directors works as a separate entity of the larger association. "What our HBA decided to do in the '90s is something to be very proud of," says Mitch Barron of DRB Homes, the HBA DOC Foundation Board Chair. "We awarded our first scholarships in 1995 and incorporated the Foundation as a charitable organization in 1997. With over $360K bestowed, we were addressing our labor shortage decades before other HBA's in the country, and now we're again way in front of the pack through our charter school."

Founded in 1962, the HBA DOC is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders and the North Carolina Home Builders Association. It has approximately 700 members who are builders, developers, subcontractors, suppliers, and professionals in businesses related to residential construction.
