A growing concern for rectal prolapse among older adults: Explains Dr. Purnendu Bhowmik

KOLKATA, India - Dec. 18, 2024 - PRLog -- Rectal prolapse is a condition that happens when the rectum (the last section of the large intestine) loses its attachment and protrudes out of the anus, turning the rectum "inside-out." Depending on the severity, a portion or the whole of the rectum can come out. The most common complications of this condition are faecal incontinence and damage to the rectum, such as bleeding and ulceration. Rectal prolapse and haemorrhoids are often confused with one another because both are associated with tissue coming out of the anus, making early detection of the diseases difficult.

Dr. Purnedu Bhowmik, a certified gastrosurgeon, has highlighted the increasing concern about this condition among older adults. He said, "Rectal prolapse mainly occurs due to weakening of the pelvic muscles or excessive straining during bowel movements. Though it can affect people in any age group, it is the older adults above the age of 50 who are more likely to develop this condition."

He stated that it is mainly because of age-related factors like a decrease in muscle elasticity along with the presence of chronic constipation. He urges patients to have greater awareness of the disorder and seek appropriate medical care.

"It is important to not ignore the symptoms and pay attention to the bowel movements. Early detection and subsequent rectal prolapse surgery can provide significant relief from the discomfort and improve the quality of life, "he added.

Here are some of the primary symptoms of rectal prolapse that you must notice.

A red and fleshy mass coming out of the anus.
A feeling of something stuck inside the anus even after you poop.
Rectal bleeding and mucus discharge.
Anal pain and itching.
A feeling of pressure and bulge near the anus.

If you are also one of those affected, don't hesitate to seek medical attention and keep the condition as it is; otherwise, it can lead to serious complications.

Success rate of rectal prolapse surgery

Surgical intervention is the most effective way to resolve rectal prolapse in the majority of patients. Moreover, it even prevents its recurrence, a common concern following treatment. He further stated, "It is also important to remember that the success rate of rectal prolapse surgery is also determined by the state of the muscles as well as the patient's age and underlying health issues."
