"Ruby" Musical to premiere at Detroit's Music Hall, spotlighting untold Black stories to kick-off Black History Month – Feb. 7-9

DETROIT - Jan. 27, 2025 - PRLog -- Real Times Media, in partnership with the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, proudly announces the Detroit premiere of Ruby: The Musical, a powerful production that amplifies a lesser-known story of resilience, racism, and justice. Produced by the renowned Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, the musical will debut Feb. 7–9, 2025, at Detroit's historic Music Hall, located at 350 Madison St. in Detroit. The event coincides with Black History Month, providing a timely platform for celebrating and reflecting on significant Black narratives.

Ruby: The Musical recounts the compelling true story of Ruby McCollum, a prominent Black woman in 1952 Florida who found herself at the center of a national scandal. Accused of murdering a white doctor, McCollum's trial shed light on the systemic racial and gender injustices of the Jim Crow South, including the often-hidden realities of sexual violence against Black women. The case was so groundbreaking that famed writer Zora Neale Hurston covered it for the Pittsburgh Courier. Now, Ruby's story comes to life through an evocative blend of original music, stunning performances, and poignant storytelling, performed by a cast of 20 dynamic singers and dancers.

Directed by Nate Jacobs, founder and artistic director of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Ruby uses original compositions and performances to explore critical themes, such as systemic oppression, intersectional struggles, and the enduring fight for dignity and justice.
