Police Officers' Defense Coalition Endorses H.R. 1046 Marc Fischer Memorial Act
H R 1046 Endorsement Letter- Rep. Bacon Police Officers' Defense Coalition is deeply committed to reducing the flow of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics throughout the United States. As former law enforcement, we know firsthand how high the stakes are and we believe this legislation will save lives and create a safer environment in correctional facilities across the country. The urgency of the need for such legislation is highlighted by recent incidents at Thomson Federal Prison which led to the hospitalization of seven staff members in a single year due to fentanyl exposure. Mail is primarily the main route for drugs to enter federal prisons, yet current screening systems are inadequate to address this threat. HR 1046 will address these insufficient protocols, requiring that the BOP develop a plan to transition to digital mail scanning. PODC stands ready to support the Marc Fischer Memorial Interdiction of Fentanyl in Postal Mail at Federal Prisons Act in whatever capacity necessary to ensure its swift passage.
