Follow on Google News | Karate vs. Stroke: Local uses martial arts to repair damage from strokeTV host Terry Wilson partnered with chiropractor Dr. Brian Garrett to recover from a stroke using martial arts and therapy. After two years of work, they are now focused on restoring his voice.
By: Brian Garrett Wilson, a black belt martial artist, treated his stroke like a test, deciding to "earn his black belt again" one challenge at a time. After being discharged from the hospital, he visited Dr. Garrett's office, where they began working together to restore his mobility and speech. The stroke damaged parts of his brain responsible for speech and balance, leaving his fingers stiff and his right hand partially fused. Dr. Garrett worked on restoring nerve function and muscle coordination, helping Wilson reconnect his brain with the muscles. Dr. Garrett focused on fixing weak nerves and later addressed the muscles that weren't firing. Meanwhile, Wilson applied his martial arts skills outside the office, using exercises like twirling a Tonfa to force his stiff fingers to move independently. This combination of chiropractic work and martial arts training stimulated his brain, aiding his recovery. Over the next two years, Wilson's condition improved significantly, but his speech and facial muscles remained affected. The pair continued their work, with Wilson using martial arts drills at home to further challenge his body and stimulate his brain's recovery. Dr. Garrett described Wilson's efforts as extraordinary, using techniques like punching trees or practicing katas to energize his brain. Initially told he would need a walker for six months, Wilson quickly adapted, using his walker to practice karate stances and strengthen his legs. Despite the physical challenges, Wilson remained determined, with the goal of regaining his voice. Dr. Garrett and Wilson continue working together, with their next goal being the restoration of Wilson's voice. Wilson is hopeful that Dr. Garrett's expertise will help him reach this final milestone in his recovery.
