By: Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties Alexandra, a single mother of two sons, and Filipe, a single father of two sons, both partnered with Habitat to create a better and more stable environment for their children to thrive. Their current living conditions were causing significant stress for their families, leading them to seek Habitat's assistance on their journey to homeownership. On Feb. 5, community leaders, sponsors, volunteers and Habitat staff welcomed the two single working parents and their children to their new homes during a joint dedication ceremony in the Journey Together neighborhood. Their newly constructed Habitat homes include four bedrooms, two bathrooms and 1,416 square feet of living space. "We are truly grateful for the unwavering support of our community, donors, volunteers and local government who helped make this possible," said CEO Becky Lucas of Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties. "Together, we have created affordable homeownership opportunities for 29 families in the Journey Together neighborhood, including our final two homes with Alexandra and Felipe. As we celebrate the completion of this neighborhood, we proudly continue our commitment to providing safe and affordable homeownership for residents in Lee and Hendry counties." Situated between McCormick Street and Prospect Avenue, Habitat's Journey Together neighborhood is a 6-acre HOA-managed community in the City of Fort Myers. With 29 single-family homes, the neighborhood features three-and four-bedroom designs, ranging from 1,200 to 1,400 square feet. Since 1982, Habitat has partnered with nearly 1,900 families to help them achieve their dream of affordable homeownership. Alongside volunteers, Habitat homeowners help build their own home by completing more than 300 hours of sweat equity, in addition to attending financial education classes, paying $2,000 in closing costs and committing to pay an affordable mortgage set at no more than 30% of their monthly income.
