By placing solar panels on rooftops and other suitable locations, BCSC enables residents to benefit from solar energy without the need for individual installations. This model not only provides environmental benefits, but also helps bridge the wealth gap by allowing community members to own the solar arrays that generate their power. The Boston Community Solar Cooperative believes in a future powered by the sun and owned by the community. Solar energy is inexhaustible, available worldwide, and has economic value. No one owns the sun, and everyone is entitled to a share. Our projects are focused on addressing the significant disparity in access to clean electricity in low- and moderate-income communities in Boston. In the last 15 years the Commonwealth has deployed 14.5 gigawatts of solar, but less than 2% is serving a low-income rate payer. BCSC seeks to change that dynamic by enabling communities to own the new solar arrays we need to decarbonize buildings, transportation and power generation. We aspire to rewrite Boston's legacy of racial injustice and deliver the environmental and economic benefits of solar energy to Boston neighborhoods. Sam Cote, Enterprise Account Executive stated "Solstice is incredibly proud to support and uplift community solar cooperatives like BCSC, that share our values and are doing the important on the ground work to live those values." "We are incredibly grateful to Solstice for their support," said Greg King, Co-Founder and Interim President of BCSC. "This grant will enable us to accelerate our efforts to create a cleaner, more equitable future for all Bostonians. We believe that those who own the power should have the power, and this funding brings us one step closer to making that vision a reality." The Solstice Community Benefit Fund is dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable energy solutions, environmental justice, and community empowerment. Their investment in BCSC underscores the importance of community-led efforts in the transition to renewable energy.
