![]() Iconic Compute!'s Gazette Magazine Returns After 35 Years, Expands Focus to Entire Retro ComputingThe Last Stand-Alone Issue of Compute!'s Gazette Published June 1990 Originally ceasing its stand-alone publication in June 1990, Compute!'s Gazette was the quintessential companion for owners of the Commodore 64 – the best-selling single computer model of all time according to The Guinness Book of World Records, with over 17 million units sold. The magazine provided essential columns, programming tutorials, software reviews, and inspiration to countless users of the iconic keyboard-computer hybrid. The relaunch is spearheaded by Edwin Nagle, President and founder of COMPUTE! Publications, Inc. Nagle's passion stems from his own childhood experiences with the Commodore 64 and the original magazine. "Growing up, my first computer was a Commodore 64 given to me by my brother John, who also gave me a stack of Compute!'s Gazette magazines," Nagle shared. "Apart from the Programmer's Reference Manual, Compute!'s Gazette provided an endless amount of inspiration and really fueled my imagination as to what could be done with these machines." Nagle rediscovered his passion for retro computing following the loss of his brother in 2022. "After I lost my brother, I got my C64 out of storage... It brought back many good memories," he said. "There is a whole community of retro enthusiasts who really push the limits of what can be done with these old machines. It's fascinating." Recognizing the growing appeal of retro computing across generations – driven by nostalgia, a desire for authentic gaming experiences on original hardware, and the challenge of tinkering – the new Compute!'s Gazette will broaden its scope. "Rather than just focusing solely on Commodore 64 users, we want to expand the scope to focus on the entire retro community," Nagle stated. "The entire spectrum of retro computers is fascinating. Unlike today where everything is the same, these early computers were all different and have their own personalities and I really wanted to create something to contribute to this entire community. My goal with this magazine is to make something both really awesome and nostalgic, but also relevant to the modern retro enthusiast that is sustainable for years to come." COMPUTE! Publications plans to publish Compute!'s Gazette as a monthly periodical, offering both digital and print editions starting in July 2025. "I believe it's important to have something physical, something tangible, to hold in your hands," Nagle emphasized. Availability: About COMPUTE!
