Cabinet Approves 6-Lane Zirakpur Bypass to Ease Traffic in Chandigarh Tricity

MOHALI, India - April 13, 2025 - PRLog -- ZIRAKPUR, INDIA: In a major infrastructure push for North India, the Union Cabinet has officially approved the development of a six-lane Zirakpur Bypass to tackle the growing traffic congestion in the Chandigarh-Zirakpur-Derabassi corridor. The project, approved under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, is set to ease the pressure on NH-5 and enhance inter-state connectivity across Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

What the Zirakpur Bypass Entails

The Zirakpur Bypass will be a 19.2-kilometer access-controlled highway, beginning from Baltana (near Panchkula border) and connecting to NH-152 near Derabassi, bypassing the crowded junctions of Zirakpur Light Point, Patiala Road, and Airport Road. With an estimated investment of Rs. 1,878.31 crore, the project is expected to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and completed by 2027.

Objectives of the Project
  • Decongest Chandigarh Tricity by rerouting heavy traffic and through-vehicles
  • Improve connectivity between Ambala, Panchkula, Baddi, Derabassi, and the Chandigarh International Airport
  • Facilitate economic growth by enhancing logistics efficiency
  • Boost real estate and industrial development along the new corridor
