By: Texas Scottish Rite Children Hospital Children may bring their own bikes for a safety inspection. Using their own bike or one provided by the organizers, students can practice their safe riding skills through a safety skills course that simulates actual road conditions. Each participant will receive a free bike helmet and have their name entered into a drawing to win a free bicycle. Lunch will be provided for children and parents, beginning at 11:30 a.m. As an added attraction Dallas Police Department and Care Flight helicopters will land in the park around 1:30 p.m. Children can greet Fire Safety Robots from the Dallas Fire Department and the City of Cockrell Hill Fire Department, explore the inside of a fire truck and add their fingerprints to the Police Department’s child safety file. Additional child safety information will be provided by the Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities, Dallas Area Safe Kids Coalition, Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire Department, Home Safety Council, North Texas Poison Control Center, Texas Department of Public Safety and members of the Texas Rangers law enforcement. “We’ve had as many as 300 children participate in our Bike Rodeo” explained Jim Hunter, Rotarian chairman. “Child Safety Day is designed to teach area children about traffic safety, in particular, but we also have information about fire and water safety and poison control. It’s a really fun morning for volunteers, parents and children.” For more information, contact the Rotary Club of Dallas at 214/742-5451 or Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children at 214/559-7656.
