Transition Town Putney Becomes US' 62nd Official Transition Initiative

March 30, 2010 - PRLog -- PUTNEY, VT: Transition US is excited to announce that Transition Town Putney has become the 62nd official Transition Initiative in the United States.  Transition Initiatives start when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges and opportunities of peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis?  This small team of people begins by forming an initiating group and then adopts the Transition Model with the intention of engaging a significant proportion of the people in their community to kick off a Transition Initiative.

Transition Town Putney’s initial contact person is Paul LeVasseur and their Initiating Group is comprised of a diverse set of individuals, each with deep roots in the local community.  “As an Organizing Committee we are very excited to become part of a movement that is addressing  head on the triple challenges of oil depletion, climate change and economic instability, while at the same time discovering our collective strengths, commitments and genius as a community to create a vitally sustainable future that makes sense to us all. The response in the Putney community has been exhilarating: finally, an inclusive, innovative, visionary, and joyful movement that we can all feel good about being a part of!”

Citizens of Putney have been quite busy and have some exciting plans for the months and years ahead.  “We have already held a well-attended four day forum on “Local Foods, Local Farms’ which concluded with an inspiring open space event that generated a number of practical and doable initiatives some of which are currently being explored. This series of events helped raise awareness about existing local initiatives and the need for more such collaborations that support our local farmers while building capacity for increased food security and community health. In April and May we will offer a series of gardening workshops, host a Permaculture Design presentation, seek funding for a local green energy building initiative, promote an already popular neighborhood greenhouse project, collaborate with a local puppet theater to host a community theater project to raise awareness about climate change and begin planning ways to promote a local food movement at the Fall 2010 International Puppet Festival held in Putney and surrounding towns. A local group will hold its first localvore potluck and we will continue to meet with those interested in participating in Transition Putney at our monthly Pub Nights and Open Discussion Meetings. Members of the Transition Putney Organizing Committee will also attend a gathering of Vermont Transition Towns on April 24th to swap ideas and support one another in any way we can.”
