Oklahoma City - Thanks to the generosity of many Oklahomans, the Orthopedic Research Foundation(ORF), a public non-for-profit organization, in conjunction with the Orthopedic Institute (OI), donated a large amount of crutches and some wheelchairs to Limbs For Life, in continuation of their efforts to help earthquake victims in Haiti. Limbs For Life is a non-profit organization that collects used limbs, along with other needed equipment for amputees, and distributes them, free of charge, to individuals in developing countries, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Immediately after the Haitian earthquake, The ORF and the Orthopedic Institute initiated a relief effort. Houshang Seradge, MD and Carrie Bear, CHT traveled to Haiti and provided needed orthopedic care. They have continued their efforts to help the earthquake victims. “Oklahomans have provided us with the ability to send a significant number of wheelchairs and crutches to the relief effort,” said Dr. Seradge, president of ORF.  Not wanting anything to be unused, and wanting to honor the ORF and OI donors’ actions, Dr. Seradge contacted Limbs for Life to pass on the remaining donated equipment to them. Dr. Seradge feels that, “although ORF and OI are still involved in the relief effort, we could either raise the money to ship the equipment ourselves, or be more cost efficient by partnering with another not-for-profit organization, who does this on a regular basis.  We want to help as many people as we can, one person at a time, and we thank the many people who donated to ORF and OI  to help Haitian victims and others in need of medical care and equipment.”

Craig Gavras, executive director of Limbs For Life, said “our on-going work allows us to help the Orthopedic Research Foundation carry on their efforts to aid the victims of the Haitian disaster. We are appreciative of the work done by the Dr. Seradge, the foundation and the Orthopedic Institute, and of their donation to help us in our mission.”
