Oct. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Direct Dimensions, Inc., a leading 3D imaging company, provided extensive support for emerging artist Josh Kline in the creation of 3D printed sculptures for his new work in the exhibition New Pictures of Common Objects, opening October 21 at MoMA PS1 in Queens, New York.  To realize his vision, Kline required the use of popular 3D technologies to capture and make his pieces but did not possess these advanced 3D tools.  Direct Dimensions President Michael Raphael responded to an online request for assistance and provided the technology, personnel, and expertise to help make the concept a reality.

In August 2012, Direct Dimensions technicians traveled to PS1 in New York to work directly with the artist to capture 3D images of the hands, feet, and heads of several live models selected by the artist as part of his statement.  Using various 3D imaging technologies, the technicians digitized the complex shapes of the model’s body parts - each holding or wearing various common consumer items. The resulting raw data was subsequently processed into exact 3D digital replicas. Kline then leveraged additive manufacturing, known as 3D printing, to create the incredibly realistic sculptures on display.

Direct Dimensions’ Raphael noted, “While 3D printing is fast becoming a popular technology for making things, the typical problem remains of how to create the digital content.  When I spotted Josh’s request for help, I knew this would be an opportunity to showcase 3D imaging for digitizing complex shapes.  We have been providing these services for over 17 years for aerospace, architecture, and art and we love working with amazingly creative people.  Helping Josh and MoMA PS1 realize this artistic vision was a gratifying experience for our team.”

The sculptures can be seen October 21, 2012 through December 31, 2012 in the New Pictures of Common Objects exhibition at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens, New York.
