July 21, 2008 - PRLog -- The new youth shelter recently installed by Bridgnorth District Council alongside the new ball court is proving a real hit with the young people in the district.

When Bridgnorth District Council decided that the community desperately needed a purpose designed teen sports facility, they invited all the active groups, including the young people in the town, to contribute ideas and be involved with the project. The sports groups felt a ball court would be the ideal solution, but the young people also wanted play equipment and a shelter where they could watch the activities and socialise.

After a successful bid for Big Lottery Funding, tenders were invited from several specialist companies, and the Council also involved the community in the decision making process.

Bridgnorth District Council Countryside and Greenspace Manager, Carolyn Healy commented, “All the submissions we received included the principal elements, but Monster Play’s design also included an aerial runway and a trendy youth shelter which offered solar powered lighting and radio and also had bluetooth connectivity so it was the firm favourite with everybody.”

The project was completed quickly and efficiently, and both the multi use games area (MUGA) and the youth shelter have been in regular use since the new facilities opened in June. Solar powered lighting provides security in the evening for young people, but it isn’t bright enough to affect the houses in the area. The solar powered radio is an extra attraction. It is set at an unobtrusive volume, switches off automatically after 7 minutes and won’t play after 10 pm, so it doesn’t disturb local residents.

Ms Healy added, “The Bluetooth option for the shelter has great appeal as it is modern, novel and reflects young people’s current use of technology. They’ve all got mobile phones and MP3 players, so while they’re enjoying the sporting activities, they can play their own music as well as listen to the radio.”

The new teen sports facility has received a very warm welcome from the Bridgnorth residents. One local mother of teenage sons summed up the feelings of young people and parents when she commented: “I don't need to worry where my sons are any more. If they aren't at school or at home, they are here using the new teen area. It's the best thing to happen to Broseley in years. The kids love it.”
