July 28, 2008 - PRLog -- The Junior League of Northern Virginia (JLNV), a women’s volunteer organization that empowers women to be a driving force to improve the Northern Virginia community and help prepare children for success, is pleased to welcome 70 local area women to its new member class. In the past two years, the JLNV has increased its new member classes by nearly 25 percent, bringing its total membership to 493.

”Our members represent a diverse cross-section of our community and come from a variety of backgrounds, from recent college graduates to stay-at-home moms and corporate level executives,” said Tamara Ashford, JLNV president. “We welcome all women with a passion to make a positive difference in people’s lives. The JLNV provides comprehensive training and experience for our member volunteers to make the greatest impact in the community.”

The JLNV’s community projects for 2008-09 include the expansion into Loudoun County of the Back-to-School Health Fairs for uninsured children, implementation of the My Life self-esteem photography and Kids Can character development programs for children living in area shelters, and continuation of its signature project with The Children’s Science Center and the national Kids in the Kitchen program to provide sound nutrition and fitness education.

“I am deeply committed to community service and feel that, by becoming a member of the JLNV, I will be able to develop my potential for volunteering and becoming a leader in my community,” said new member Sarah Soriano of Fairfax, Va.

Membership is now open to all women aged 21 years and over residing in Northern Virginia and its surrounding areas for the JLNV’s fall new member class.
