Feb. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- "Dog Jack" is based on the novel written by Florence Biros.  The screenplay was written and also directed by Edward T. McDougal.  The movie tells of a runaway slave boy named Jed(played by Ben Gardner) and his loyal dog who jboth joined the Pennsylvania 102nd Volunteers. As Jed joins the Pennsylvania 102nd Volunteers he brings with him a tremendous fear of confronting his former captors yet an all-encompassing desire to take vengeance on them and free his mother and sister back at his former plantation.

Jed mistrusts white people yet is drawn to two members of his company - a hardened veteran who tries to use Jed's bitterness to make him a soldier and a chaplain(played by Frank Kasy) who is against the war. The war for Jed's soul intensifies when Jed must face the regiment led by his former master, now a general in the confederate army.

Dog Jack is also the story of the love and allegiance of the men of the Niagra Volunteers to their mascot and companion, "Dog Jack."  Dog Jack was the mascot of the 102nd Regiment P. V. V. Washington Infantry during the Civil War. Jack was with his regiment from 1861 to 1863 until he became a prisoner of war. He was captured by the Confederate Army at Salem Church, Virginia, and later exchanged for a Confederate soldier.

Award winning legend Louis Gossett Jr. joins the ensemble cast which also features Nikki Taylor Melton, Steve Christopher , Ken Craig, Eddie Huchro, Jeannette Blackwell and Piglet (Dog Jack).

Dog Jack was filmed in Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Some of the scenes in PA  were filmed at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.  It is one of the country's largest museums dedicated to honoring and remembering our Veterans. There are exhibits that span from the Civil War to present day conflicts that tell the stories of ordinary citizens called upon to do extraordinary duties for the United States of America.

Among the photographs that hang in the Allegheny County Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in PA, is a faded image of a black and white dog with a woeful look that conceals his battlefield bravery. The bull terrier named Jack will soon become legend again in the heartwarming film Dog Jack.
