Skin Care: How to Maintain Healthy Skin

A big question for the summer is, “How do I keep my skin beautiful?” That question can be answered in a few ways. We at Curl Salon are going to give you some steps to take that will keep your skin gorgeous for the summer and all year round!

July 2, 2009 - PRLog -- The best thing that you can do to maintain healthy skin is to keep a healthy diet. The old adage “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to maintaining the health of your skin. Eating a lot of greasy, fried foods and fast food will wreak havoc on your skin, even your mood. Research says that after eating fast food, your body automatically reacts negatively by increasing blood pressure and decreasing your mood, making you feel fatigued and sluggish. Eating foods in all three food groups; fats carbohydrates and proteins (in their proper proportions) will have your skin glowing in no time!

Vitamins and dietary supplements also play an important role in the health of your skin. Supplements are great to take since you may not get these nutrients from the food that you eat. The vitamins that are the most beneficial to the skin are Vitamins A, C, D and E. Vitamin A, or retinoic acid, supports skin's overall health because it aids in the health, function and repair of skin cells; it has also been shown to increase skin's elasticity and thickness. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is vital in fighting the aging process and promotes collagen production, keeping skin healthy and firm. Vitamin D is the promoter of rapid healing of skin and bones; the best source of this particular vitamin is sunshine (in limited amounts, of course!) Vitamin E, or tocopherol, helps to heal damage to skin when used internally and externally. When used externally in topical lotions or creams it can repair structural skin damage, like severe burns or stretch marks.

The most important thing that you can do to keep your skin glowing, is to drink plenty of water! Water is an essential nutrient that none of us can live without. Research shows that an estimated 75% of all Americans are dehydrated! Drinking water is essential to the health of the skin because it keeps cells healthy and removes toxins and waste from the body. Water also helps maintain your proper body temperature and aids in the digestion of your food. When all of these functions are performing properly, your skin will be healthy, glowing, and attractive! Drinking at least eight glasses of water that are 8 oz each will help to keep you hydrated and your skin beautiful.
