July 8, 2009 - PRLog -- There are thousands of shampoos that exist today, one for each and every hair type and scalp condition. A few examples are shampoos that add tint to your colored hair, ones that remove mineral deposits from your hair and cleanse product buildup, and even prescription shampoos. We here at Curl Salon are going to give you some shampoo basics so that your great style starts with a solid foundation.

Shampoos are the biggest expenditure when it comes to purchasing products. Recently, the most popular shampoos have been ones that are sold through professional salons. Let's go over some basic forms of shampoos: everyday, conditioning or moisturizing, medicated, clarifying, dry or powder, and color enhancing. Everyday shampoo is balanced to the pH of your skin and helps to close the cuticle; this type can be used for color treated hair. Conditioning shampoos are designed to make your hair smooth and shiny and helps chemically treated hair avoid damage. Medicated shampoos are formulated with special chemicals that help reduce scalp conditions such as dry, itchy scalp or dandruff. Clarifying shampoos contain ingredients that strip your hair of product buildup, this type should not be used regularly, limit to twice monthly. Dry shampoos clean your hair without the use of soap and water. Color enhancing shampoos are formulated with basic colors and are used to brighten your color and eliminate unwanted color tones.

It is very important not to shampoo your hair too often as it can strip hair of it's natural oils. To find out if you are shampooing too much, try to go one or two days longer without shampooing to see how your hair reacts. If there is too much buildup of natural oil, continue with your normal routine. If not, try to only shampoo when your hair and scalp become dirty. It is important that you select a shampoo based on the condition of your hair and scalp, either oily, dry, or chemically treated. Generally, oily hair should be shampooed more often than dry or normal hair.

It's okay to feel a little overwhelmed about selecting a good shampoo for you, but don't be. If you need some professional assistance, we are here to help.
