Sept. 28, 2009 - PRLog -- The Society on Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SCWD) is currently preparing for the 5th International Cachexia Conference which will be held on December 5-8, 2009 in Barcelona, Spain.

Prof. Stefan Anker, co-chairman of the congress said concerning the program: “we are happy to announce that over 140 abstracts have already been submitted and we would be pleased to receive further submissions. Therefore, we have decided to extend the submission deadline to October 15, 2009 in order to allow more to send in their contribution.”

This conference will provide an ideal opportunity for attendees to connect with outstanding leaders in the field of Cachexia research and management. Attendees will include clinicians, researchers and educators interested in a multidisciplinary approach of Cachexia and Wasting Disorders.

Prof. Josep Argiles, local Chairman also stated: “it is our hope that, following this educational program, participants will be able to improve the management of patients with Cachexia across the continuum of care. The educational value of the program is acknowledged by the CME-accreditation provided by our educational partner the St. Louis University Department of Continuing Medical Education.”

The SCWD is confident that this conference, organized with the support of MedEd Global Solutions, will be a great success.

About Cachexia:

Cachexia, is a complex metabolic syndrome associated with underlying illness and characterized by loss of muscle with or without loss of fat mass.

As the treatment of diseases such as cancer, CHF, COPD, HIV infection, and kidney disease becomes increasingly effective, the diagnosis and treatment of cachexia associated with these diseases will become important goals to improve morbidity, mortality, and particularly, the quality of life.

Cachexia is infrequently identified or diagnosed, and rarely treated. Active research is being developed in this field.
