Oct. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- If you like to entertain guests, you will love to impress them with the new artisan wooden serving tray available from Vern's Wood Goods, a small Minnesota-based woodworking company specializing in high quality cutting boards, wooden kitchen utensils, wine gifts, and now wooden serving trays.

The artisan wooden serving tray features contrasting hardwoods for stunning beauty, graceful curves, large convenient handles, and a solid feel that will make this tray a great conversation piece at any party as well as an instant family heirloom.

You now have two options if you would like to own one of these works of art:

- The tray is available for immediate purchase in limited quantities from http://www.vernswoodgoods.com.  Vernon Mayer hand crafts each one of these from beginning to end, one at a time, using traditional time-honored methods of joinery, and a meticulous, labor intensive approach to achieving a sensual finish.
- If you are a woodworker, you can build your own following the easy step-by-step instructions available on the WoodWorkers Guild of America web site: http://www.wwgoa.com/articles/projects/artisan-serving-tray/.

For those interested in following Vern’s instructions and building your own artisan serving tray, you will find a couple of pleasant surprises with this adaptation of a classic design. First, while recessed trays of this style are generally constructed by plowing out large volumes of wood with a router, which is both wasteful of expensive hardwood resources as well as extremely messy in your shop, this version features sides that are 'built up', which is a more economical and pleasant approach. Secondly, the delicate sculpting of the handles is reduced to two easy steps, first using a dado blade on a table saw, followed by series of simple cuts with a hand-held jig saw.

The tray was initially designed for Vern's Wood Goods customer Erica Antony who, upon receipt of her commissioned piece said "I love it!  I can't wait to show this off to my guests.  I will also keep this in mind for a special wedding gift, anniversary gift, or holiday gift."

Vernon Mayer, founder of Vern's Wood Goods, decided to release the plans for the tray to the WoodWorkers Guild of America as a gesture to the woodworking community: "I have been inspired by the work of many talented woodworkers during my woodworking tenure, and I feel privileged to have this opportunity to contribute to the body of knowledge and share ideas with others.  I am grateful to the WoodWorkers Guild of America for recognizing my work and giving me a voice in the woodworking community."

George Vondriska, Managing Editor of WoodWorkers Guild of America said “We are delighted with the innovative design of this tray, and expect that our members will find this to be a rewarding project to build in their shops."
