Oct. 12, 2009 - PRLog -- Project Read, based in Provo, Utah, has been chosen by Reading Horizons as its featured site for donations.  This selection was made based on the efforts Project Read has displayed to reach the 21,000 Utah County residents in need of literacy help.

Project Read is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing basic reading and writing instruction to low-literacy adults in Utah County.  Staff members and volunteers at Project Read combine their efforts to assist these students achieve self-sufficiency and obtain reading skills.  Project Read accepts students who are at least 16 years of age, speak English competently, and test at or below a 7th grade level in reading or language.

One example of how Project Read can change the lives of these 21,000 residents is illustrated through the story of David Palmer.  David Palmer was able to improve his reading level by 6 grades in 2 years at the age of 47.  Overwhelmed at his progress, Palmer gives all of the credit to his wonderful tutors.  He often tells new tutors, “You know, you’re giving somebody something they can’t pay for.  There is no way that I can repay anybody on the staff here, [or] my tutor, for what they’ve given me in two years. It’s amazing!”

Those who would like to support Project Read’s efforts to improve the lives of residents in Utah County are invited to visit the Reading Horizons Web site, where they may play “Lemons for Literacy.” Lemons for Literacy is a fun, simple game in which players must correctly identify the definitions of various words and terms. For each correct answer, a lemon is squeezed into a pitcher. With every lemon that is squeezed, the amount that Reading Horizons donates to Project Read will increase.  Donations will help to provide the Reading Horizons literacy program at Project Read.  The website for Lemons for Literacy can be found at: http://www.readinghorizons.com/lemonsforliteracy/lemons.html.
