NComm Adds ITU Y.1731 to its Ethernet OAM Source Code Offerings

New offering provides needed Ethernet performance monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities for both carrier and CPE equipment developers

Nov. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- HAMPSTEAD, NH – NComm, Inc. today released TMS version 6.71 that adds ITU Y.1731 functionality to its WAN/Ethernet OAM (Operations, Administration and Maintenance) software suite. NComm’s TMS source code provides a complete solution for quickly adding reliable OAM telecommunications service functionality to communications equipment platforms. The ITU Y.1731 addition joins the IEEE 802.1ag Ethernet OAM software released earlier in the year. Both IEEE 802.1ag and ITU Y.1731 are immediately available for delivery. Development is continuing on additional OAM standards and Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching.

The offering of NComm’s Ethernet OAM TMS reflects the continuing shift to deploy traditional LAN technology in formerly Wide Area Network applications. The original Ethernet LAN technology did not include carrier OAM functionality. Deploying Ethernet in WAN environments demands it. NComm’s new Ethernet OAM source code offering puts this increasingly critical OAM functionality within reach of all equipment manufacturers no matter their size.

“The release of Y.1731 provides our users with this important Ethernet OAM standard.” said Bill Matern, President of NComm, Inc. “As our traditional WAN customers are shifting to Ethernet for WAN legacy and new applications, IEEE 802.1ag and ITU-T Y.1731 are by far the most requested. The primary users of WAN OAM, carriers and service providers, are pushing for the same kinds of alarm and performance monitoring tools for Ethernet provisioning and management as available on WAN equipment.”

NComm’s new Ethernet OAM TMS offering delivers the same unique value as its flagship WAN TMS including standard compliance, flexibility, completeness and portability. “NComm is a unique provider of OAM source code because of our extensive experience on the WAN side of OAM. Satisfactory implementation of Ethernet OAM requires that you know how carriers and service providers actually intend to use it; NComm knows and so do our customers,” said John Brandte, Vice President of NComm’s Marketing and Business Development.

As with all NComm products, Ethernet OAM includes easy-to-use APIs for all communication between the software and other parts of the CPE or service provider equipment. The software accommodates a wide variety of hardware configurations; it works with any Real Time Operating System and processor, including multiprocessor environments, and produces a complete, standard compliant Ethernet OAM interface. O/S pre-ports include Linux (2.4/2.6), VxWorks, OSE and Nucleus Plus.  NComm’s Jump Start program offers unprecedented assurance of a fast and successful implementation.
