Nov. 24, 2009 - PRLog -- Many food processing jobs require great strength, agility and workers are at almost constant risk of injury.  ERGOdynamics recently designed, built and delivered a customized GoLift GL3 to Childer's Meat, a meat processing and packing facility in Eugene, Oregon.  The machine will be used to move large quantities of ground beef from the grinding machine to a large vat where the meat is prepared for packaging.  Previously this job was performed by a worker loading a stainless steel pan with ground meat, walking the pan across the room, climbing a ladder to then scoop the meat into the vat.  This required a lot of movements that risked injury to the worker, especially in a cold environment where muscles can't perform as well as in a warm workspace.  Risks involved arm, neck, shoulder and upper back pain from overhead lifting, wrist and arm pain from scooping, leg strain from climbing the ladder with a load as well lower back issues from lifting the pan of meat from nearly floor level.

It was clearly important to implement a power option in this facility but there were a few considerations to take into account.  First and foremost the machine needed to be sanitary for handling food, raw meat in particular.  The standard GoLift is made of powder coated steel, but this one is made completely of stainless steel.  The entire machine and every weld had to be sealed tight and saldered with food grade salder to eliminate spaces for food scraps to accumulate and grow bacteria.  The new stainless steel power lift has to withstand pressure washing and sanitizing solutions on a regular basis.

"The new stainless steel lift looks like it will be a great success in this application" says Myrlin Deveraux of ERGOdynamics.  The new machine was delivered just last week and the worker responsible for the task was quite pleased with the performance.  Other workers who had been promoted from the position were a bit envious they hadn't had a such a tool, all in fun of course.

Reducing job site injuries is obviously important to any company, but many times the bottom line prevents businesses from investing in the right equipment.  As it turns out, many times the equipment purchased for safety reasons also increases productivity.  This new lift will substantially increase the productivity at this facility.  The hopper on the lift holds over 150 pounds of ground beef, much more meat than the previous human powered pan system and performs the task in a fraction of the time.  The worker is also to worker longer without fatigue since all lifting has been eliminated from the position.
