Peoples Income Tax Offers 50% Discount on Tax Returns for Unemployed Workers

Jan. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- With the unemployment rate still so high, many individuals and families are struggling to make ends meet. So effective immediately, Peoples Income Tax will offer a 50% discount on tax preparation fees to individual taxpayers who lost their jobs during 2009 and are still unemployed at the time the tax services are provided. The Unemployment Discount will be available at all Peoples Income Tax locations through March 31, 2010.
   
"It’s just one small way we can help local employees who have lost their jobs due to the economic recession," said Chuck McCabe, President and CEO.  “We want to help them not only save money on preparing their tax returns, but also ensure that they get the full advantage of new tax laws including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” said McCabe.

To qualify, the taxpayer must document that he or she received unemployment compensation during 2009 and is still unemployed at the time the tax return is prepared by Peoples during the 2010 tax season.  In the case of a joint tax return, the primary wage-earner must be unemployed to qualify for the discount.  The Unemployment Discount may not be combined with any other discount offer and is available only for fees to prepare individual non-business returns and no other services.

Taxpayers who expect to continue to receive unemployment benefits, into tax year 2010, need to evaluate their withholdings to determine if an adjustment should be made in the amount of federal tax withheld from their unemployment benefits to prevent a balance due at the end of tax year 2010.
   
“Peoples Tax will provide a free consultation for unemployed taxpayers to determine the tax consequences of their status, even if Peoples does not prepare their tax returns,” said McCabe.
