Jan. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- During the spring 2010 semester, The John Marshall Law School is initiating its first eClasses through the Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits and the Center for Intellectual Property Law.

“These on-line courses will have a high appeal to lawyers and practitioners. John Marshall is the only law school with an American Bar Association-acquiesced graduate curriculum in employee benefits, and an international reputation in intellectual property law,” said Kathryn Kennedy, associate dean for Advanced Studies and Research. “We have accomplished legal practitioners with extensive experience in their fields serving as faculty.”

The first classes will be three-credit-hour courses Fundamentals I of Retirement Plan Issues and Survey of Retirement Plan Issues, and two-credit-hour courses Survey of Executive Compensation Plans and Survey of Welfare Plan Issues.

These courses are offered in the MS and LLM Employee Benefits curricula. In addition, Law of Patents, a two-credit-hour survey course of United States patent law, will be offered in the LLM Intellectual Property Law curriculum.

“These eClass courses have been painstakingly created to employ the advantages of remote learning while maintaining the highest standards of instruction,” said Professor June Liebert, director of the Louis L. Biro Law Library at John Marshall.

“While John Marshall Law School eClasses require the same commitment as traditional courses, the asynchronous format allows students to complete assignments from anywhere, day or night. In addition, no special hardware or software is required.”

Professor Robert Nye, director of Distance Education, said these four classes are the beginning of a new distance learning initiative for the law school. “We are planning to add three new courses each semester and degrees in the near future,” he noted. “We see eClass courses as another way The John Marshall Law School is making law degrees accessible to today’s professionals.”

The high-caliber eClass courses may be better suited to students’ individual needs than the traditional classroom. Liebert said participants should have access to a reliable computer and high speed Internet access. They should be willing to participate in online groups and discussions and feel comfortable using the Internet and email.
