The word Mara comes from the Maasai languages and means ‘spotted’. The reserve gets its name due to the many landmarks and cloud formations that give it a spotty look when seen. The reserve is also home to the ‘Big 5’. This ‘Big 5’ consists of lions, African elephants, Cape buffalo, leopards, and black and white rhinoceros. The black and white rhinoceros are on the endangered species list. Sadly, a species of black rhinoceros was stated to have reached actually extinction recently.

A plant that is immensely useful in most of the world grows in Masai Mara reserve. This plant is known to most as acacia. Other names from this plant are thorn trees, wattles, yellow-fever acacia, whistling thorns, and umbrella acacias. During the year 2005 there were said to be a little over 1200 species of this plant worldwide. More than half of these are located on the continent of Australia.

The hartebeest is an animal of interest found in the Masai Mara reserve. This creature is in the antelope family. Most of them live in a forest as they are grass eaters. Males of the species are a dark brown color. Females of the species are normally a yellow brown color. This makes it easy to distinguish the two for those interested.
