Chicago Adult ADHD Therapy Group for Beginners

Projects go unfinished. Bills go unpaid. Jobs are lost. Careers flounder. Family life becomes tense. Intelligent, creative adults feel plagued with chronic feelings of overwhelm and stress.

In recognition of the havoc that ADHD can create in people’s lives, ADHD Centers is launching Chicago’s first comprehensive psycho-educational group therapy program for ADHD adults.

FOCUS: Adult ADHD Therapy Group for Beginners is a 6-week program to help adults recently diagnosed with any of the subtypes of ADHD / ADD to develop strategies and skills for modifying their behavior and coping with the emotional effects of having ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD / ADD), is a neurobehavioral condition affecting 4%-6% of the U.S. population that causes excessive distractibility, poor organization, procrastination, impulsivity, and poor planning and time management.

The FOCUS program teaches ADHD adults to develop and implement skills in organization, prioritization, planning, time management, reducing procrastination, maintaining focus and motivation, and overcoming chronic feelings of frustration and low self-esteem.

“Your diagnosis points you in the right direction – effective treatment puts you back in the driver’s seat, so that you can manage your ADHD symptoms well and regain control of your life,” said nationally-recognized ADHD expert and author, Dr. Peter Jaksa, clinical director of ADHD Centers , Chicago, who heads the FOCUS program.

Through structured psycho-educational group therapy and interaction with peers, participants will learn to:

•   Improve productivity at work and home
•   Strengthen relationships
•   Manage finances
•   Create healthy self-care routines
•   Leverage the strengths – energy, enthusiasm, creativity – of ADHD
•   Repair damage to self-esteem

“Structure doesn’t have to be restrictive – it can be truly liberating,” Dr. Jaksa said. “By setting realistic, doable goals and achieving them, you energize yourself to move on to the next goal, building and sustaining motivation and positive energy.”
