A traditional use of Cynodon is for eye disorders and weak vision; the afflicted are advised to walk bare foot on dew drops spread over Cynodon plant each morning. According to Ayurveda, India's traditional pharmacopoeia, Cynodon plant is pungent, bitter, fragrant, heating, appetizer, vulnerary, anthelmintic, antipyretic, alexiteric. It destroys foulness of breath, useful in leucoderma, bronchitis, piles, asthma, tumors, and enlargement of the spleen. According to the Ayurveda, Doobi is acrid, sweet, cooling and useful in biliousness, thirst, vomiting, burning sensation, bad taste in the mouth, hallucinations, epileptic fits, fatigue, leprosy, scabies, skin diseases, dysentery, fever, erysipelas, epistaxis etc. According to Unani system of medicine, Cynodon plant is bitter, sharp hot taste, good odor, laxative, brain and heart tonic, aphrodisiac, alexipharmic, emetic, emmenagogue, expectorant, carminative and useful against grippe in children, and for pains, inflammations, and toothache (Agharkar 1991). Virus-affected discolored leaves of Cynodon are used for the treatment of liver complaints.. In Homoeopathic systems of medicine, it is used to treat all types of bleeding and skin troubles.
Hair tonic/rejuvenator-The juice of Doobi herb is also considered best to stop hair falling. In case of Alopecia, the healers suggest the patients to prepare a paste by mixing Doobi herb in clay soil and apply the paste on head and sit under the open sky (in sun) for at least one hour. The soil on which Doobi.grows is normally used in this process.
For migraine -According to the traditional healers, it is also good for the patients having the problem of migraine
As an eye tonic-The juice of leaves is also applied and used as eye tonic. It is considered good to prevent the problem of Motiabind (Cataract). In case of conjuctivitis, the juice is applied externally on eyelids in order to provide cooling effect of eyes.
Haemostatic- It stops almost all bleeding of any aetiology ,like epistaxix ,Mennorhegia,bleeding from fresh wounds,piles etc.
Antioxidant effect –The water infusion/decoction has remarkable antioxidant and free radical scavenging effect.It save the body from many degenerative disorders like Parkinsonism,Diabetes,neuronal disorders, Alzheimer’s disease.
Hypoglycemic efficacy -In the dose of 500mg/kg body weight it normalizes the blood sugar level.It also prevent the body from unwanted weight loss and muscle wasting.
Corrects the lipid profile/hypolipidemic effect-It reduces the cholesterol and harm full low density lipid in blood .It also increases the helpfull high density lipid in blood.
Antiulcer properties -Alcoholic extract of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) was evaluated for preliminary identification of phyto constituents and screened at 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg b.w given orally for pylorus ligated and indomethacin induced gastric ulcer models in albino rats. Results showed the presence of flavonoids and proteins. Alcoholic extracts at 400 mg/kg and 600 mg/kg showed significant (>0.001) anti-ulcer activity, comparable to the standard drug ranitidine, which may be due to the presence of flavonoids .
Antimicrobial activity Antimicrobial activity of cynodon extract acts with full efficacy and active against -Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans
