U.S. launches official tourism promotion effort

March 8, 2010 - PRLog -- The United States is moving forward with its first formal nationwide plan to attract more visitors to the country, largely due to a global economic downturn that has resulted in a decline in tourists and tourism-related revenues in recent years.

A report by CNN notes that with President Barack Obama's signature, the U.S. now has a nonprofit Corporation for Travel Promotion that will work to encourage more people to tour America and to make the process easier for those who do wish to visit.

One part of the program will be a $10 visitor fee used to fund the program, and CNN cites one study which predicts that the program, if well-executed, could bring 1.6 million new international visitors to the U.S. each year.

Senator Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat who sponsored the bill, noted that it has the potential to bring in new revenues while also reducing the budget deficit and creating more jobs.

"From the heartland to the coasts, tourism creates jobs that can’t be outsourced. It also increases business revenue in every state," said Dorgan.

While a trip to the United States may become easier than ever in the coming years, that is no reason for international visitors to overlook the importance of travel insurance when planning their visit.
