Sunray Avenue estate gets a new community garden

National tree-planting charity renovates borders and plants trees on south London estate

March 9, 2010 - PRLog -- On Saturday, 6 March, the charity Trees for Cities worked alongside local residents and local councillors to transform two green spaces on the Sunray Estate, SE24.

New fruit and nut trees were planted along with vegetable beds, herbs and a beautiful wildflower area. The existing boundaries and rose beds were lovingly restored and replanted to reflect the local area’s historic links to Homes for Heroes and the City Garden Movement.

Following a consultation programme with local residents, Trees for Cities has been developing gardening workshops to help maintain, harvest and use the fruits, nuts and vegetables providing a sustainable source of healthy food. The new wildflowers, shrubs and trees will provide a fantastic resource for people and wildlife, increasing local levels of biodiversity.

The charity has been working in partnership with Southwark Council, with support from the City Bridge Trust, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Forestry Commission’s London Tree and Woodland Grant Scheme, managed by Groundwork, and Comic Relief.

The project is part of Trees for Cities’ mission to improve urban spaces by increasing the number of plants and trees, bringing local communities together to learn how look after their trees and benefit from them. The charity has planted over 140,000 trees worldwide.
