Maryland Students Get Free Tutoring Scholarships

March 10, 2010 - PRLog -- (Gaithersburg, Maryland)  – Two Montgomery County students will receive tutoring scholarships this spring from a new learning program.  Homework and Hoops, an after-school program combining physical activity with tutoring by schoolteachers, debuts in Gaithersburg, Maryland on April 20 according to founding businesses Ashley Tutors and One on One Basketball.

“Homework and Hoops is our way of helping kids meet First Lady Michelle Obama’s challenge of tackling childhood obesity,” said One on One’s Regional Director Brett Isaacson.  “Homework and studying for tests increases in the spring, but that’s just the time our children are ready to get outside and play.”

Mixing tutoring with supervised play is better for exercise and academics, according to Ashley Tutors CEO Josh Chernikoff.  “Studies from Duke and the University of Michigan show this type of kinesthetic learning improves test scores and retained learning,” he said.  “With supervised play and professional teachers, Montgomery County parents know that their children are learning, getting ready for the end of the school year and having fun while exercising.”

Homework and Hoops for elementary aged school students starts at Travilah Elementary School in Gaithersburg on April 20.  Parents interested in a scholarship can ask their child’s teacher or guidance counselor to nominate a student using a form on the company’s website.
