Garden of Eden Organics Announces New CSA Site in South Bay, San Diego

March 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Garden of Eden Organics, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program since 2003, announces the opening of its eighth San Diego County site on March 26, 2010. The new site is located at the South Bay Community Church on Euclid Avenue, in National City.

CSA programs bring consumers locally grown, seasonal produce directly from farmers. Garden of Eden Organics’ customers may choose from one of three “share” quantities- weekly boxes of certified organic produce for an individual, small family or large family.

Unlike traditional one-farm CSAs, Garden of Eden Organics is a cooperative and currently partners with several San Diego County farmers. Consumers benefit from the co-op system with a large variety of fruits and vegetables, whereas many CSAs offer only vegetables.

Owners Jennifer and Paul Trejo also have practical experience, as they are farmers themselves. “We’re excited to expand our services to the South Bay,” Jennifer Trejo says. “And on a larger level, we’re proud to be involved in a committed movement towards healthier eating. With 300 organic farmers in San Diego County, we’re part of the largest organic farming demographic in the country.”

A recent box included spinach, radishes, baby broccoli, Swiss chard, parsley, rosemary, celery, dates, Pink Lady apples, oranges, avocados and kumquats. The Trejos post recipe suggestions on their web site.

Not only do consumers help support local growers and the regional organic agricultural economy, the CSA’s central drop sites also save fuel costs. “Your CSA produce is traveling no more than 100 miles, as opposed to the 2,000-mile journey of some supermarket produce,” Jennifer Trejo says.

Garden of Eden Organics will become involved in the South Bay community with a focus on diabetes prevention and nutritional education in the schools. They will also assist with a food bank for the homeless at the South Bay Community Church.
