March 22, 2010 - PRLog -- WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — In an effort to provide a wider variety of enriching, experiential learning opportunities this summer, SciWorks (http://www.sciworks.org/) — the non-profit Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County— has significantly expanded its summer “SciCamp” program. Whether a child is ready to blast off into space, concoct a chemical reaction, engineer a skyscraper or dive into nanotechnology, he or she will find an enriching, hands-on experience that explores the scientific realm.

“An engaging SciCamp can lead to a child’s lifelong interest in and pursuit of science education,” said Dr. Bev Sanford, SciWorks’ president/CEO.  “SciCamp allows students of all ages to experience science in a fun, comfortable environment.  Through these enrichment programs, our goal is to help create the next generation of scientists and innovators—young people who will pursue the science, technology, engineering and math professions, and who will ultimately help drive our economy.  Science is all around us; our SciCamp Kids are learning how to be scientifically responsible citizens—our future workforce who help build a strong economy and contribute to a healthier, greener environment.”

After researching and analyzing the camp market in the Triad, SciWorks made the following changes to its offerings:
•   Double the number of camps
•   An increased variety of programming with eight different week-long camps for rising kindergarteners through grade 6 — everything from “Rainforest Round-Up” and “Buildaroos” to “Architect Apprentice” and “Crime Scene Explorers”
•   Addition of programming for preschoolers with half-day camps “The Bear Facts” and “Me, Myself and I”
•   A new week-long “NanoCamp” for rising grades 7-9, which provides a full day of exploration into the exciting world of nanoscale science and technology.  “We are very excited about this new offering,” Sanford said. “Participants will find the answer to such questions as: ‘How do geckos stick to walls?’ ‘Will scientists be able to create an elevator into space using carbon nanotubes?’ And, ‘How do tiny explosions inside some inkjet printers create text?’”
•   Addition of SciWorks 101, an opportunity for students in rising grades 9-12 to experience up-close and hands-on what it is like to work in a science center during a half-day volunteer-in-training program during the week of June 14 – 18.  “They will take a behind the scenes tour of the planetarium, help care for SciWorks’ resident animals, learn popular floor demonstrations like the Van de Graaff generator, and teach visitors about the science and mystery behind the exhibits,” Sanford said. “ This is an excellent opportunity for any student — and especially those who are thinking about a career in science or education.”

Camp prices range from $100 to $220 per week. To meet the financial and scheduling needs of parents, SciWorks offers half-day and full-day options for most camps. Families who register for more than one camp will receive a multiple registration discount, and those who refer a friend who registers receive an additional discount. SciWorks members also receive a discount.

SciCamps start June 14 and run through August 13 for kindergarten age and older.  The preschool camps for ages 4 to 5 run through August 20. You can download a complete camp brochure with descriptions and dates at: http://www.sciworks.org
