March 24, 2010 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, CA – Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Tom hanks today urged the nation’s largest theater chain, National Amusements, to honor America’s hard-working teachers with discounts during National Teacher Week, May 3-9.

“There’s no group more important to the future of American, despite what my accountant might tell you,” said Hanks, who received an Oscar for his role in “Philadelphia.”

Bullock and Bridges, who won Best Actress and Actor Awards in this month’s ceremony, agreed.

“To be competitive in the world, to create a Green America, to preserve democracy for the benefit of all and not just the wealthy and the elite, we need to encourage teachers to do their best and show that we truly do appreciate their hard work,” said the two in a statement.  “We need to send a message that our entire society values the work that they do, and that being a teacher is an elite profession, despite the all-too-frequent low pay schedules.

In a letter to Shari Redstone, National Amusements president , the three noted that they had sold “quite a few tickets” for National Amusements in the past, and that some “payback” for their efforts might well be in order.

The three urged National Amusement to match AMC’s offer of a $2 discount and a free Coca Cola for all teachers with a valid ID during that week.

Redstone’s office had no comment.

National Teacher Week is celebrated by communities all over the U.S. as a time to recognize the achievements and contributions made by local educators.
