May 19, 2010 - PRLog -- A painting by one of Scotland’s most respected and admired 20th Century artists is to be auctioned on Friday, 28th May as part of Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones’ May Fine Art & Antiques Sale.

The oil on canvas, entitled ‘Nude Girl with Death’s Head’ is by Renfrewshire-born David McClure (1926-1998) and measures 102cm x 127cm. Carrying an estimate of £6,000 - £10,000, this is an excellent example of McClure’s bold, modern style and is believed to be one of the largest of his works on the market today. The artist studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1947 until 1953 before travelling to Spain and Italy on scholarship from 1952 to 1953; after which he won the Andrew Grant Fellowship Award which allowed him to paint in Florence and Sicily.

McClure then returned to his Scottish roots, holding the post of lecturer in painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1957 to 1983. Throughout his illustrious career McClure exhibited worldwide; this particular painting was bought by a private collector at a Scottish exhibition in the 1970s and has remained in their hands ever since, making its sale all the more exciting. Ben Gamble, MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, says:

“This is a very special work by a prominent artist and we’re delighted it has been consigned to us for sale. It has been in private hands from the outset and is likely to be of interest to collectors of Scottish and British art as well as those who admire nude portraiture. We are anticipating great interest from all corners of the British Isles and further afield in this very exciting piece and expect our commission, telephone and internet bidding contingents to be particularly strong.”

The McClure is set to come under the hammer on Friday, 28th May at Cuttlestones’ Penkridge saleroom, near Stafford. The sale commences at 10am and viewing is on Thursday 27th from 10am and the morning of the sale from 9am.

For those who can’t attend the auction live internet bidding via the-saleroom.com, telephone and commission bidding options are available. For further details and images of the piece visit http://www.cuttlestones.co.uk email office@cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905.
