Educator Terry LaRocca To Speak About Being Foster Youth

May 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, Ca -Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education, has invited former foster youth to speak about their experience at a town hall meeting.  “Breaking Barriers to Higher Education" is taking place on Saturday May 22, 2010. One of the key-note speakers will be award-winning educator Terry LaRocca, Junior Business Woman of the Year for LA County,  about being in the foster care system together with her brother Tommy until the age of 18.  Ms. LaRocca will offer inspirational insight about becoming an accomplished professional in spite of the odds. Terry LaRocca is best known for developing her own method of teaching phonics.  She is the founder of Almost School and Terry’s Tutoring Team. http://www.almostschool.com

Anthony Portantino has represented the 44th Assembly district since his election to the Assembly in November, 2006. The 44th district covers the cities of Altadena, Duarte, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena and Temple City.  It also includes portions of Arcadia, Monrovia, Mayflower Village, Glassell Park, Highland Park, Mount Washington and Eagle Rock.

In 2010, Assemblymember Portantino was named to head the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation.  He also serves on Higher Education, Government Organization, Human Services and Transportation Committees.  He is chair of the Assembly Select Committee on the Preservation of California’s Entertainment Industry and a member of the Foster Care Select Committee.
