July 14, 2010 - PRLog -- A spokesman from the American Patriot Program (TAPP) has announced that Texarkana, Arkansas will be the host city for TAPP's American Patriot Award recipient.

In a highly coordinated effort with American Legion Post #218 of Irving, Texas, and the Elks Lodge #399, of Texarkana, Arkansas, The American Patriot Program has announced that combat wounded U.S. Army Cpl. Andy Burnett has been awarded the American Patriot Award.

An American Patriot Honor Event is planned for Sunday, July 18th at 2:00 pm at the Elks Lodge #399 in Texarkana, Arkansas.

Cpl. Burnett was shot by a sniper in Kandahar, Afghanistan on July 17th, 2008 serving with the 173rd U.S. Army Airborne 503rd Infantry.  The Burnett selection marks only the second time the American Patriot Award has been given to a member of the Armed Forces that was wounded serving in the war in Afghanistan.  The first was presented to North Dakota National Guardsman Specialist Sam Floberg in September of 2009.

Cpl. Andy Burnett was nominated for the national level award by Wayne Duckworth.  Wayne is the Commander of the American Legion #218 of Irving, Texas.  Duckworth, also having served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, said of the nomination, "[Post]...218 could not have selected a better candidate for the American Patriot Award- guy's like Andy Burnett deserve our appreciation and we are honored to have nominated Andy for this national honor."

Long John Silver's Manager Wally York, whose restaurant has pledged an honor event Patriot Pleasantry- and who has a son set to deploy to Afghanistan in September as a member of the United States Marine Corps, said of being part of the Honor Event, "Long John Silver's is proud to be part of this effort to honor someone that has gone above and beyond for our freedom."

Texarkana, Arkansas Mayor Horace Shipp, who will be delivering the keynote said of the event, "Arkansas has a special place for those who have sacrificed the way Andy has."

Support has come in from all parts of the Country for Cpl. Burnett.  Jerry Reed, President of Operation Military Embrace, a former Marine, emphasized the need to express genuine appreciation and gratitude for those who are serving, "We owe Andy a debt of gratitude and this national level award is given deservedly to this Airborne Soldier."

Patriot Pleasantries have come from Hero Bracelets, both the Texas Rangers and Frisco RoughRiders baseball teams, and from a patriotic woman from Amarillo, TX., Donna Hogue.  Donna Hogue created a U.S. Army detailed fleece blanket for the combat wounded medic.

The July American Patriot Award was crafted by Hoosier Bat Company of Valparaiso, Indiana, Hoosier Bat Company is one of six national members who are part of the TAPP team.  Vaughn Hockey joined the TAPP team in May and will craft the first ever American Patriot Goalie Stick Award in it's upcoming Operation Fire and Ice Tour.

Hoosier Bat Company Co-owner Deb Cook mentioned how humbling it was to be involved in this event, "It's easy to take things for granted living in this Country and what soldiers like Andy Burnett have done to protect us should never be forgotten."

As part of TAPP's new Patriot League of Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients, Cpl. Burnett will receive a personal congratulatory message and autographed book by Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Don Ballard.  Col. Ballard received the Medal of Honor for his actions in 1968 while serving as a hospital corpsman in Vietnam.

The Arkansas and Texas chapter's of The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will also be honoring Cpl. Andy Burnett  with a special presentation within the event and David Hall of the nation's only traveling replica of the Liberty Bell will also play a part at the July 18th event.
