June 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Camachile (Pithecellobium dulce), is a common thorny tropical American tree that originated from Mexico and other Central and South American countries where it is known as Guamachil. It is also called Manila Tamarind in English, opiuma in Hawaii, kamatsile in Philippines and Jungle jalebi and Madras thorn. Also called blackbead, sweet inga, sweet tamarind.
The flowers are greenish-white , fragrant, sessile and reach about 12cm long though looks shorter due to coiling. The flowers produce a pod with an edible pulp. The seeds are black.
The camachile fruit or pods contain a white acidic and sweetish pulp that is eaten raw or prepared as a beverage.
