Baltimore Children Learn Sign Language During Local Story Time Event

June 21, 2010 - PRLog -- HUNT VALLEY, MD - 6/21/10 – Teacher and author Anita Reese will show local youngsters how to sign the alphabet when she presents her new book to a group of Kids Story Time readers at Greetings & Readings of Hunt Valley.

Reese will head the event on Saturday, July 10, beginning at 11 a.m. Her new book, “Learn to Read with Sign Language,” combines the basics of alphabet learning with the sign language alphabet, giving learners a physical representation for the new sounds they are learning.

Parents will discover a fun and effective teaching strategy appropriate for children of different learning styles and abilities. Even non-English speaking students will find this interactive approach to learning very helpful.

In American Sign Language, spelling the alphabet by hand is used primarily for proper nouns and for emphasis, clarity or instruction. With “Learn to Read with Sign Language,” children can learn the manual symbols for the alphabet as they learn the different letters themselves and the sounds each one makes.

Kids Story Time is held at Greetings & Readings every Wednesday and Saturday at 11 a.m. The events are free to all, and aimed at readers between the ages of 2 and 6. Cookies and free balloons are available at the conclusion of each event.

Reese was a first grade teacher for 30 years, during which time she developed and used many teaching methods for reading. She received her Master’s degree in communicative disorders from Johns Hopkins University, certifying her to teach Special Education from kindergarten to 12th grade. She currently resides in Hampstead, Maryland.
