Shibboleth implementation opens up a new market for Koninklijke Brill NV

Semantico, a leading provider of services and technology for online publishing, has completed an important update to the Brill access management system. German users will be able to login using Shibboleth authentication when accessing Brill online.

June 23, 2010 - PRLog -- With usage statistics becoming increasingly sophisticated and library budgets under pressure it’s becoming more and more important for publishers to make sure end users can access their publications as easily as possible so that institutions know the resource is valued. The addition of DFN-AAI, the German Shibboleth federation, to Brill’s online publishing platforms helps widen the readership of their publications by allowing end-users easy access through a mechanism they feel comfortable with.

Shibboleth allows users to identify which institution they would like to use to authenticate their access to online resources. Users gain access through a Where Are You From (WAYF) log-in screen that asks them to choose which institution they belong to. They can then login using a consistent user-name and password rather than having to remember different passwords for different online resources.

Access to Brill’s online resources is managed through the Semantico Access Management System (SAMS). SAMS provides a refined solution that can integrate with third-party systems to control access and subscriptions across multiple product sites containing journals, e-books, reference works, directories and scholarly publishing.

SAMS allows publishers to offer different access models to meet the varying needs of institutions and their end-users including perpetual and renewable subscriptions, limited free access, token or voucher based access and pay-per-view.  Users can use a variety of methods to login, including IP address, secure referrer page, using a username & password, library card access and using Shibboleth authentication.
Sam Bruinsma, Business Development Director Brill, said, ‘We are enthusiastic about this latest update of our access management system. Offering Shibboleth has become a prerequisite for further developing our online presence in the German academic market. Our library customers want to improve their service for students and researchers by using Shibboleth. And we are convinced that facilitating easy access will increase the value of our online content’.
Richard Padley, Managing Director, Semantico said, ‘SAMS is designed to provide a powerful approach to the complex access management issues faced by academic publishers. Shibboleth authentication is clearly valued by end-users and we’re delighted that this update provides choice for researchers when logging in to Brill’s important online resources.’
