Tanning Tax goes into effect today July 1st, words from Dr. Marcy Street of Doctor’s Approach.

July 1, 2010 - PRLog -- East Lansing----The tanning tax goes into effect today. Starting July 1st, 2010 there is a 10% tax on sales of indoor tanning salons. The idea is to help pay for healthcare reform and it is expected to generate $2.7 billion over the next 10 years. As of now, it is not evident if the tax will discourage indoor tanning. It is well known that indoor tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75% because tanning booths emit both UVA and UVB radiation. Tanning booths emit mostly UVA but at doses 12 times stronger than the sun.

The 10% tanning tax although is only in affect at tanning salons; when visiting health clubs as of now, the tax will not be applied.

According to Dr. Marcy Street, medical director of Doctor’s Approach “Ultraviolet radiation levels from indoor tanning devices can be 15 times greater than tanning outdoors. At the current rate, according to the skin cancer foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer”
