Follow on Google News | A Super Monday Special At Newton AbbotAction packed racing fixture at Newton Abbot on July 5th with sponsored races by SIS and Racing Welfare, plus a school reunion and two school visits for the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust’s ‘Racing to School’ Programme.
The afternoon racing commences at 2:15pm and another bumper crowd is expected with over 1,000 tickets pre-sold as part of the racecourse’s buy-one-get- The afternoon fixture will see the sponsorship of races from a number of key organisations and individuals in the racing industry. Newton Abbot’s media partner SIS, frontrunners in the provision of picture and data sources to the betting industry, are sponsors of three of the afternoon’s seven races. The racecourse also welcomes well-known racing photographer Colin Turner and the national charity Racing Welfare, who provide help and support for people who work or have worked in the industry. The Colin Turner Supports Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle takes place at 5:15pm. Following the opening of the new stable lads’ canteen at Newton Abbot earlier in the year by retired champion trainer Martin Pipe CBE, his wife Carol Pipe will be hosting a school reunion for North Town School Old Girls at the afternoon meeting. Carol Pipe said: “Following the triumphant success of the initial Old Girls reunion a number of years ago, we all decided that we should make it a more regular occurrence. Due to my family’s close relationship with Newton Abbot Racecourse, it seemed the ideal venue to host our latest reunion. A number of the Old Girls haven’t been to the races before so we’re all thoroughly looking forward to a fantastic afternoon of racing. ” The North Town School Old Girls Beginners Chase takes place at 2:45pm. Alongside the regular racing fraternity, the racecourse will also play host to two schools on Monday. As part of their ‘Racing to School’ programme, the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST) have invited King Edward VI College, Totnes to participate in their educational programme at the racecourse. Newton Abbot Racecourse have also invited the local Widecombe-in- Ex-jockey and now Regional Educational Officer for BHEST, Ollie McPhail, will guide pupils behind the scenes of the racecourse on a race day. As part of the maths curriculum, the pupils will tour the facilities, including the weighing room, to learn about the importance of the relationship between weight and performance in horseracing and to hear first-hand about what it is like to be a jockey. Monday’s race meeting is the third of the racecourse’s five ‘Super Monday Special’ buy-one-get- Monday’s racing commences at 2:15pm.
