Guinness World Record Attempt Fastest Cycle Across America:N-S, W-E 4700 Miles Under 50 Days

July 7, 2010 - PRLog -- BLAINE, Wash. Today, Thursday July 8, Paul Spencer, a 29 year old British cyclist, will begin his attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the fastest cycling time across America, from the Northern border to the Southern border, and then from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic Coast.  He plans to complete the 4,750 mile trip in 50 days or less.
The previous Guinness World Record for the trip was 444 days and was achieved by Kent Johnson of San Diego, Calif., in 1999. Spencer begins the North to South leg of the trip today at the City Hall in Blaine, Wash., and aims to complete it in approximately 15 days later when he arrives at San Ysidro, a community in San Diego, Calif., that is near the U.S.-Mexico border. He will then begin the West to East leg of the trip at City Hall in Los Angeles and end at City Hall in New York City.  His goal is to complete the entire journey on or before August 25, 2010.

Raising Funds for Charity
As part of his attempt to break the Guinness World Record, Spencer is raising money to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Lupus Foundation of America, and Disability Snowsport UK.
Paul explains: “These three charities are all very important to my family. My parents are long term supporters of the Boys and Girls Club of America; my sister was diagnosed with lupus at the age of thirteen and I myself, when working in Whistler was able to witness at first hand the spirit, skill and determination shown by athletes in the Paralympics.”   

About Paul Spencer
Paul Spencer, who will celebrate his 30th birthday days after crossing the finish line, is an avid athlete, who is both an accomplished skier and ski instructor, a cyclist (training for the world record attempt under the guidance of mountain bike coach Katrina Strand), as well as a surfer, kite-surfer, sky diver and triathlete. The week before his Guinness World Record attempt he participated in the BC Bike Race, Epic challenge. In April he wrapped up a stint working for the ski race operations at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. His experience working with and observing the skiers in the Paralympics Alpine Ski events in Vancouver inspired him to raise funds for Disability Snowsport UK. He has participated in many endurance cycling events, including British Columbia’s Nimby 50 mountain bike race, cycling 874 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End in Great Britain, and mountain biking more than 600 miles from Lhasa, Tibet, to Katmandu.
He plans to complete the Tour D’Afrique in 2011 and aspires to one day climb Mt. Everest.
