Milestone: Halocarbon Celebrates 60 Years of Successes

The milestone, along with its series of industry-changing “firsts,” reaffirms to its valued customers and loyal employees that its pioneering spirit endures and is a sign of the increasing importance of fluorochemistry.

Halocarbon started out in 1950 making inert, fluorine-based lubricants. The company’s founders had earlier been members of the team responsible for developing inert lubricants as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II.

The company soon expanded into other areas of specialty aliphatic fluorochemistry and has had a number of significant firsts, including:

•   World’s first large-scale producer of trifluoroacetic acid and trifluoroethanol, both still widely used to make pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals
•   Production of the first commercial quantities of the ozone-layer friendly refrigerants HFC-134a and HFC-32
•   First U.S. producer of an operating-room safe fluorinated anesthetic
•   Leadership in the development of hexafluoroacetone derivatives for photoresist and coating uses

Today, Halocarbon has three main product areas: fluorochemicals, inert lubricants and inhalation anesthetics. All of the company’s products are manufactured in the United States at an expansive, state-of-the-art facility in North Augusta, South Carolina. Its main headquarters and sales office are located minutes outside of New York City.
