Aug. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- MILWAUKEE – The Society for Clinical Data Management recently published Project Management, a new chapter of best practices for applying PM principles to clinical data management.

The chapter is a new addition to SCDM’s Good Clinical Data Management Practices (GCDMP), an award-winning resource for clinical data managers and others involved in medical device, biotechnology and pharmaceutical trials. In a concurrent release, an update to the chapter Vendor Selection and Management was also published.

According to SCDM, clinical data managers are increasingly expected to take on project management roles within their organizations.

“Our traditional role of entering data, reviewing listings and writing or resolving queries is being redesigned as we watch,” said Susan Krikorian, CCDM, co-chair of the SCDM Products & Services Committee. “In today’s CDM environment we all take on responsibilities for managing our projects to one degree or another. Project Management is a specific set of abilities and actions that we all must master within our more traditional clinical data management roles or in the newer, evolving opportunities.”

The new GCDMP chapter outlines best practices for project management principles and activities as they apply to clinical data management within the context of an individual study.

The chapter on vendor management has been updated to include considerations of how a vendor may affect a trial, explanations of the variety of business models, and additions to the contract development and scope of work sections to provide best practices for maintaining vendor relationships.

The new texts are available free to SCDM members, or by purchase to nonmembers, through the SCDM website, http://www.scdm.org/gcdmp. Podcasts of the chapters are in production and scheduled for release this fall.
