First of all, you know that the most common type of AC power adapter involves a small box, with one wire to go to the computer and another wire to go to the wall. There is usually an LED light on it, to tell you that it is on. When your laptop doesn't work, you need to troubleshoot the AC power supply, system board and the battery are functioning correctly. The battery is an important part. It supplys power to the input-side of the voltage regulators, just like the power from the AC adapter. Additionally, there is a charging circuit, which uses the power from the AC adapter prior to the voltage regulators, to charge the battery. (By the way, this is why the AC adapter voltage is always rated higher than the battery's rated volatge-- you need higher voltage for charging.)

Verify the Hp laptop battery like this:
1. Insert the battery into the battery compartment on the bottom of the notebook PC.
2. Connect the AC power supply and allow the battery to charge for 15 to 30 minutes.
NOTE: The power LED, located near the power icon (displayed as a lightening bolt on most PCs) , should glow while the battery is charging.
3. Unplug the AC power adapter cord from the notebook PC.
4. Press and release the Power button to start the computer using only the battery as the power source.
If the PC does not power on, then the battery needs to be replaced. Contact HP service and support for further assistance.
If the notebook PC does power on, the battery is functioning, however you should run the HP Battery Check utility to evaluate the battery's health.
NOTE: If you have purchased a second battery for your notebook PC or you have access to an identical battery, you can also check the battery by inserting the second battery into the PC and performing the Troubleshoot the battery steps again.

Your new HP laptop battery comes in a discharged condition and must be charged before use (refer to your computer manual for charging instructions). Upon initial use (or after a prolonged storage period) the battery may require two to three charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum capacity. When charging HP laptop battery replacement for the first time your computer may indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes. This is a normal phenomenon with rechargeable batteries. Simply remove the battery from the computer and repeat the charging procedure.
