India's gaming industry has the potential to take on the West just like the way Bollywood has done with its films.

Sept. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- INDIA’S gaming industry has the potential to take on the West just like the way Bollywood has done with its films, predicts Matthew Jeffrey, global director of Talent Brand, Electronic Arts ( EA).

EA is one of the world’s leading developer, marketer, publisher and distributor of video games based in California, USA. Jeffrey was speaking on the sidelines of ‘ Gaming Tour’, a seminar on the gaming industry organised by the Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics ( MAAC) in the city recently.

“ If it is possible in films, why not in games?” he asks.

“ For this, you have to indeginise your games and give them a distinctly Indian feel in terms of content and culture,” he continued.

According to him, the key to tapping India’s potential lies in encouraging youngsters to get into courses related to gaming.

“ Gaming requires a high level of technological competency. This makes the service for qualified candidates imperative,” said Jeffrey.

A typical game title takes about 24 months to make. Some of the popular EA titles are FIFA, Sims, Need for Speed, Harry Potter, Tiger Woods, Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space . And who said women are not interested in gaming? “ Nearly 60 per cent of the players of Sims , are women,” said Jeffrey.

The game is a simulation of daily activities in a suburban household. Ramkumar Warrier, business head, MAAC, said that there is a considerable increase in the demand for a comprehensive course in game development over the years.

The manpower requirement for gaming in India is expected to grow to 13,000 by 2012, said Warrier.

With mobile subscription on rise, interest in mobile gaming too has witnessed a corresponding growth. A report by In- Stat/ MDR, a market research firm, shows the market for mobile gaming in India was $ 26 million in 2004. It was expected to touch $ 336 million by 2009.
